Bangkok to Ayutthaya Train: Stations, Tickets & Day Trips

Trains from Bangkok to Ayutthaya use different departure stations depending on the service. Check whether your selected train leaves Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, Hua Lamphong or another named station. Ayutthaya Railway Station is outside the main historical-park area, so include the onward local transfer in your day-trip plan.

Which Bangkok station should you use?

Krung Thep Aphiwat handles many northern and northeastern long-distance services. Hua Lamphong still serves ordinary, suburban and some tourism services; it did not close completely when long-distance operations moved. The Tourism Authority of Thailand's station-relocation notice explains the distinction.

Use the full departure-station name for the specific train you choose. A cheap local-service example from one station is not the price or departure point of a reserved express service from another. Check the return station too: an arrival described simply as Bangkok may not bring you back to your outbound terminal.

Compare the service, not just the lowest fare

Point to compareWhy it matters
Departure stationYour local journey in Bangkok can change the practical convenience of the train
Train and stopping patternTravel times differ by departure station and number of stops
Seat and coolingA basic fan-cooled seat differs from a reserved air-conditioned seat
How tickets are soldSome local services use station sales or different advance-booking arrangements
Total priceRail fares, seller fees and local transport are separate parts of the day-trip cost

Do not treat “15 baht”, “50 minutes” or another headline example as universal. Check the exact service and date. A low local fare does not imply that every train is sold at that price online, and an air-conditioned carriage is not guaranteed merely by the word “express”.

How to check the timetable and buy tickets

Use the SRT timetable and train-tracking service and D-Ticket for operator information. If a local service does not appear in the online booking channel, ask SRT about the current sales arrangements instead of assuming it has been cancelled or is sold out.

For a reserved service, check the class, assigned seat, passenger details, total charge and ticket-delivery instructions. For a walk-up service, allow time at the station and verify both outbound and return options before starting your visit. Short-distance journeys can have different sales windows from the full route of the same train.

From Ayutthaya station to the temples

The railway station is east of the historical island, across the Pa Sak River. You will need a local transfer or a suitable walking route to the places you want to visit. Do not assume that leaving the train puts you inside the historical park.

Compare available local transport, the exact drop-off point and the fare before setting off. River-crossing availability and pickup arrangements should be checked locally. If hiring a bicycle, consider heat, traffic, your cycling confidence and the distances between sites. Keep water available and plan breaks.

A workable day-trip plan

  1. Choose an outbound train that leaves useful sightseeing time after the station transfer.
  2. Identify a realistic return service and a backup before leaving Bangkok.
  3. Group the temples you want to visit geographically rather than assuming every site is close together.
  4. Leave time to return to the railway station and board without rushing.
  5. Avoid a tight connection to a separate flight or prepaid evening appointment, as trains can be delayed.

Check attraction opening hours and ticket conditions separately; they are not included in an ordinary rail ticket. Travelling early can help with the heat, but the best departure depends on the current train options and your starting location.

Continuing north after Ayutthaya

If you plan to continue to Chiang Mai, arrange the onward section separately and confirm that your chosen train calls at Ayutthaya. Check its boarding date and time carefully, particularly for overnight travel. Read the Ayutthaya–Chiang Mai guide and train-class overview before choosing accommodation.

For document preparation, use the ticket guide, or search available trains for your intended date.

Sources and booking checks

For current train searches and operator instructions, use SRT D-Ticket and the State Railway of Thailand. ThailandTrain.org is an independent booking service. Check the total price, available accommodation, ticket-delivery instructions and change conditions for the product you select.

FAQ

Which Bangkok station has trains to Ayutthaya?

Services can use Krung Thep Aphiwat, Hua Lamphong or another named station. Check the full departure station for your selected train; the stations are not interchangeable.

Are all Bangkok–Ayutthaya tickets 15 baht?

No. Fares depend on the service and accommodation, and a local-service example is not a quotation for every train or online seller.

Is Ayutthaya Railway Station inside the historical park?

No. It is outside the main historical-park area, east of the historical island. Plan a local transfer and confirm current crossing or pickup arrangements.

Can I buy every local train on D-Ticket?

Do not assume every local service is sold through the same online channel. If your train is absent, check the current sales arrangements with SRT.
