Bangkok to Chiang Mai Train: Daytime and Overnight Guide

You can travel from Bangkok to Chiang Mai by daytime train or overnight train. Choose the service around the journey you want: daylight views and a seat, or an overnight trip with a confirmed sleeper berth. Search your travel date for current departures, accommodation and the total fare before making connecting plans.

Start and finish at the correct stations

Many long-distance departures use Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal in Bangkok. It is a different station from Hua Lamphong, and the name “Bangkok” alone is not a reliable instruction for a driver. Use the full station name shown in the search result and on the issued ticket.

Chiang Mai Railway Station is outside the old-city area. Allow for local transport to your hotel after arrival and check its check-in time separately. An early train arrival does not automatically provide early access to a room.

Daytime train or overnight sleeper?

Journey typeUseful whenCheck carefully
Daytime serviceYou want to see more of the route in daylight and prefer to stay awakeThe seat type, cooling, journey duration and arrival time
Overnight sleeperYou want a bed during the long journeyA confirmed sleeper berth rather than a seat, upper or lower position, and next-day arrival
Overnight seated serviceYou accept seated travel in exchange for the available fare or departureThe actual seat class and whether you can comfortably rest for the journey

Not every class runs on every train. The timetable, rolling stock and availability can change, so a photograph or a generic class name cannot establish the exact equipment for your booking. For berth details, see the Train 9, Train 13 and sleeper guide.

Read the timetable by travel date

Check the departure time, arrival time and arrival date together. Overnight departures normally arrive the following day. If you board at an intermediate station, the date and time for that stop can differ from the original Bangkok departure.

Use the SRT Northern Line timetable as an operator reference and confirm the service offered for your date in D-Ticket. Before travelling, check current notices and station displays. Allow flexibility after arrival; a scheduled connection is not a promise that the train will arrive on time.

Compare fares and booking conditions

Compare the same train, date, class and seat or berth when assessing prices. The total may include a seller's service fees. First-class accommodation normally contains two berths; a single berth is not automatically a private cabin. Second-class sleepers use shared carriages with curtains.

Advance-sales windows depend on the train and journey section. Do not apply a fixed 90-day rule to every search. If nothing appears, check whether sales have opened and whether the channel sells that service before assuming it is full.

Enter passenger information carefully, read change and cancellation conditions, and check when a travel document will be issued. A booking request or payment receipt does not guarantee a particular berth. Save the issued ticket offline and follow its display, printing or collection instructions.

Can you stop in Ayutthaya or continue to Chiang Rai?

For a stop in Ayutthaya, book the separate journey sections you intend to use. Do not assume that you can leave a reserved train and resume later on the same ticket. Consult the Ayutthaya–Chiang Mai guide for the onward rail section.

Chiang Rai is a different city and has no direct SRT passenger train. If continuing there, allow for the transfer from Chiang Mai station to the correct road-transport pickup point, then the onward road journey. Use the Chiang Rai connection guide; rail tickets to Chiang Mai do not include that transfer unless it is explicitly listed.

Before departure

  • Recheck the station, train number and travel date.
  • Keep your issued ticket and original identification available.
  • Bring water, suitable snacks and a light layer; catering and meals vary.
  • Use designated luggage space and keep exits clear.
  • Build a flexible arrival plan rather than a tight separate flight or tour connection.

Search Bangkok–Chiang Mai trains to compare the options available for your date.
