Krung Thep Aphiwat Station Guide: MRT Access & Boarding
Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, formerly called Bang Sue Grand Station, is Bangkok’s main departure hub for many long-distance trains to northern, northeastern and southern Thailand. Your ticket’s departure station is decisive: Hua Lamphong, Thonburi and Bang Sue Junction are different stations, and some services still use them. Search using the station printed on your ticket rather than a generic “Bangkok railway station” map result.
Identify the correct station before leaving your hotel
Krung Thep Aphiwat and Bang Sue Grand Station refer to the same large terminal. MRT Bang Sue is the nearby Blue Line station serving the terminal; its platforms are for the metro, not your Chiang Mai or Surat Thani train. Keep the Thai station name, สถานีกลางกรุงเทพอภิวัฒน์, and your ticket available when asking a driver or member of staff for help.
Compare the travel date, departure station, train number and departure time before setting out. An overnight train is booked for the date it leaves Bangkok, even when it reaches its destination the following morning. A route guide or map pin cannot override the station stated on the issued ticket.
Arrive by MRT Bang Sue
Take the MRT Blue Line to Bang Sue, station BL11. The operator’s official Bang Sue station page identifies Exit 3 for Bang Sue Grand Station and lists an elevator at that exit. Follow current signs for the railway terminal and long-distance trains, using staff assistance if the accessible route is unclear.
The metro exit, railway entrance and long-distance boarding point are separate parts of the journey. Allow time to walk between them with your bags. Inside the terminal, follow the departure board and platform-access instructions for your train. Do not assume every passenger must go upstairs or downstairs: your correct route depends on where you entered and the access point assigned to your service.
Find your train and board the correct carriage
- Check the departure board. Match your train number, destination and departure time. A service may continue beyond your own stop, so the final destination shown can differ from the destination on your ticket.
- Resolve ticket questions first. If you have only an order confirmation, check the seller’s ticket-delivery instructions. Have the issued rail ticket and the identification used for booking ready before joining the boarding queue.
- Use the announced boarding point. Ask official railway staff if the board changes or you cannot find the entrance. Do not choose a platform from an old photograph, blog diagram or another passenger’s departure.
- Check carriage and seat or berth. Once access opens, match the carriage number and your reserved place. Keep smaller valuables with you and avoid blocking doors or aisles with luggage.
For a first visit, we suggest reaching the terminal around 45–60 minutes before departure, with extra time for ticket assistance, children or reduced mobility. This is our planning recommendation, not an official boarding cutoff. Follow any earlier reporting requirement on your ticket and the station’s announcements.
Tickets, onward routes and waiting time
You can compare journeys using SRT’s official D-Ticket service or a booking provider. A published timetable does not mean a particular sleeper berth remains available. Review the departure station, class, fare conditions and ticket-delivery method before paying, especially for a popular overnight departure.

If you arrive early, locate your boarding area before shopping or eating. Check facilities and opening times with the information desk; do not plan around an unverified luggage-storage counter or overnight waiting arrangement. Keep your ticket accessible offline and carry enough phone battery to display it.
